Adapting Workflow (The impact of COVID-19)

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

The last few weeks have seen an unprecedented amount of change in the world. With COVID-19 quickly spreading, the UK has now put into effect strong measures to keep people isolated at home.

This has, of course, affected all learning across the country. Teesside University included.

The University suspended all face to face teaching on 17th of March, with a ‘reading week’ instead being implemented as the situation progressed. On the 23rd of March during the beginning of week nine of this project the university stopped all access to the buildings on campus. Placing the slides for the remainder of our timetabled lectures online to view in our own time. This cannot be described in any way other than devastating for myself and a large number of my cohort who are relying on the university facilities to finish their final year projects.

With apps anywhere also (at this time) not available from home, the programmes and services I no longer have access to which are needed to complete certain aspects of my project are:

  • Zbrush 2019 (Full Version)

  • Substance Painter (Full Version)

  • 3D Coat

  • Vicon Post (Motion capture cleanup)

  • All Motion Capture facilities on site (including the facecam helmet we made last week)

  • All on site render farms

  • All equipment booking services

Thankfully some companies have free versions of software already available or are allowing workers to download extended free trails and enabling off site access. This means that I am still able to use the following programmes from my current set up:

  • Adobe cloud

  • Most Autodesk software (MotionBuilder, Maya and Arnold Renderman included)

  • Unreal Engine (and most Plug-ins)

  • Zbrush Core 2020 (and trail till 30th March, but new trail could potentially be enabled)

  • Substance Trail (30days)

  • OBS

Reallusion (iClone) is also doing an off site access programme, however the university does not have the software so unfortunately I cannot make use of this. My free trial for iClone and the will have to suffice for the foreseeable future.

With this all in mind, including the recent extensions and setbacks in my workflow I have had to amend the last few weeks of my initial project plan.

My focus will be shifting majorly from Fenrir to Iclone and the realtime rendering of facial capture data. Via my Spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Hk8b0JV_r9-aGNg9sw5A7fvRDIIPyq0bueRClje2J-M/edit?usp=sharing ) you can see that my work has been heavily impacted by the last few weeks, putting me behind by approximately three weeks. My initial plan however, had around three weeks of buffer room so (although very hectic) I should still be able to finish this project with the extended deadline.
